Caring for Your family's Growth Ruler

March 30, 2024 3 min read

As parents, we understand the significance of our children's growth rulers. These wooden keepsakes not only track our little ones' heights but also hold a treasure trove of memories.

Like any cherished possession, our growth rulers require proper care to ensure they stand the test of time.

But despite our best efforts to keep things pristine, life has a way of leaving its mark. Amidst the laughter, play, and growth, it's inevitable that scuffs, smudges, dings, and errant marks will happen.

You can decide whether to see those marks as something that needs fixing or to embrace them as more than just accidents. They can become a part of your family's story, where every mark shows how you've grown and changed over time.

In this guide, we'll explore essential tips for the long-term maintenance of your growth ruler, from routine cleaning to repairing scuffs and marks.

Routine Cleaning:

To keep your growth ruler looking its best, occasional cleaning is essential.

  • Grab a soft damp cloth and gently wipe away any dust or dirt that may have accumulated.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals, as they can damage the wood's finish and detract from its natural beauty.

Repairing Scuffs and Marks:

Start by removing your ruler from the wall and placing it on a clean, flat surface. This will give you a better view and prevent any accidental damage to your wall.

From there, the method of repair varies depending on the type of wood your growth ruler is made from.

Natural/Raw Wood:

(Hickory, maple, white oak, and real walnut)

  • Sand the affected area to remove any debris or splinters. Start with a lower grit sandpaper to tackle larger chunks, then switch to a higher grit for a smooth finish.
  • Don't be afraid to put in some elbow grease – it may take a bit of effort, and you might notice some sawdust, but that's perfectly normal.

Painted White:

  • After cleaning, you can try lightly sanding the scuffed area, and touching up with white satin paint to match the original finish.
  • If you find extra Sharpie marks, rubbing alcohol can help remove them. Just be aware that it may also remove the sheen from the paint, so proceed with caution.

Stained Walnut:

  • Sand the area and touch up with a matching stain pen or can to restore the color and finish.
  • Take your time with this process to ensure a seamless blend with the surrounding wood. Remember the principle of "less is more." Start with a small amount of stain, as you can always add more later if needed. Applying too much stain initially can lead to an uneven or overly dark finish that may not blend well.

Our growth rulers hold a special place in our hearts, documenting the growth and milestones of our children as they journey through childhood. With proper care and maintenance, these wooden treasures can withstand the test of time, continuing to bring joy and nostalgia for years to come.

By incorporating routine cleaning into our household chores and knowing how to address scuffs and marks as they arise, we can ensure that our growth rulers remain beloved family heirlooms for generations. So let's roll up our sleeves, embrace the occasional dusting and sanding, and continue to cherish the memories etched into every inch of our growth rulers.
